On Aug. 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible from a broad path sweeping across the Atlantic Ocean, Southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon moves in front of the sun while it's slightly larger in apparent size so that the moon completely covers the sun's disk.
The path of totality will measure a maximum of 160 miles (258 kilometers) wide, and it will cross Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan and Saudi Arabia.
The August 2027 "eclipse of the century" will bring the longest totality since 2009 and the longest totality on land since 1991. Peaking at 6 minutes, 23 seconds, it also will be the longest remaining totality of the 21st century.
The most advantageous viewing location will be Luxor, Egypt, the site of the ancient capital of Thebes and home to myriad monuments and temples. It's almost guaranteed to have clear skies.

Over 88.9 million people will witness totality that day in 12 nations: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan and Saudi Arabia.
Egypt is the top destination for this eclipse, with the vast majority of tour groups heading to the country to see the Nile, desert landscapes and, of course, its magnificent monuments. The country's almost zero chance of clouds in August is another major asset.
Though the Giza Pyramids near Cairo are outside the path (they will see just a 95% partial solar eclipse), the ancient city of Thebes — modern Luxor — is close to the point of greatest eclipse. An immense 6-minute 20-second totality will grace the Karnak and Luxor temples, the Colossi of Menmon, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut and the Valley of the Kings and the Queens. The Nile will be buzzing with cruise boats and packed hotels so early booking will get essential.
